[ RadSafe ] The urgency to revive the radsafe list

First, “Hi!” Parthasarathy!

Now to the “wake”…

>I did not know our list which was vibrant for several years is much less so; in fact it looks like, it is on oxygen in the ICU! (Wed 9/12/2018 1:25 PM)

>I do remember this as being a great resource in the past. (Wed 9/12/2018 1:29 PM)

>I agree with John Johnson. RADSAFE should return to glory. (Wed 9/12/2018 11:50 AM)

>I’m now retired but would like to see Radsafe become scientifically and radiation protection interesting again. (Wed 9/12/2018 11:11 AM)

>The list tends to stray from the topic of radiation safety quite often. I have heard many say that they don’t use the list for that reason. (Wed 9/12/2018 10:28 AM)

>Probably off topic to radsafe list discussions, but Facebook model with quick dumb "Like" and "Unlike" buttons and LinkedIn groups have killed meaningful intelligence discussion, conversation and debate.

Plain text radsafe does not have slightest chance against the gimmicks and bells and whistles and graphics of popular social media, facebook, LinkedIn and (140 or 280 Character) Twitter,

Call me nostalgic or old fashioned or what have you, (Tue 9/11/2018 8:49 PM)

Come on now fellow Radsafer’s, all of this talk of Radsafe’s past greatness sounds like a collective case of Futurama “Scarborough Fair” syndrome:

I agree with Ed Tabai (Tue 9/11/2018 8:49 PM), the RadSafe e-mail and web Archives list is a forum in an now old fashioned format in competition with newer, slicker formats (e.g. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.) that are likely more appealing to most of our younger colleagues/successors. The list is still great, it has just been a bit slow for a long while. Maybe a newer, cooler platform / format / makeover is needed in order to appeal to the new / net generation of radiation safety specialists.

I still like the current format as it is familiar and has been comfortable for me since 1996- or 1997-ish, and although a bit slow of late, it has been and continues to be informative, useful and a great place to interact with fellow radiation safety types many of who I have had the pleasure to meet in person and get to know after seeing them first for years on RadSafe. Apparently, I too am nostalgic or old fashioned or what have you!

Friends,
I do not regret starting this discussion. I did not know our list which was vibrant for several years is much less so; in fact it looks like, it is on oxygen in the ICU! Since my messages were bouncing because of some software bug which could not get fixed, I opted out of the list for the past few years.
More than the details of the interaction of ionizing radiation with living matter, we must realize that young professionals must get the correct information. My occasional forays in to ANS website were useful. The attempt of politically conscious people to encourage the development of best scientific foundation for radiation protection by "legislation" or "petitioning" looked interesting.

Dr Bernard Cohen (Late) with whom I had several interesting interactions wrote a delightful paper which, among other matters, quantified the "cost to save a life from radiation exposure" many decades ago. I am very happy to see Mr James Conca of "The Forbes" fame religiously taking the same route. I recall during mid 60s one of my colleagues tried to calculate a Rupees per roentgen value! The abysmally low value led to derisive comments that with that sort of value we can operate many radiation facilities without adequate shielding!

A few years later, another colleague tried to work out some unit such as Roentgen Equivalent Chemical. There was no follow up on such concepts. I worked out with reasonable amount of assurance(!!) that a man smoking 20 cigarettes a day is risk wise exposed to 50 rem per year. I also showed in some weird manner that if the atmospheric tests continued at the same rate at their peak in 1963, the dose contribution to public will be equal to the normal operation of a few hundred PHWRs for thousands of years PLease don't ask me the logic now. I was very pleased to see that the then Minister of Atomic Energy kept a small book in his pocket and it contained some of these pearls of wisdom!

I was very pleased to get a copy of Dr Antonne Brook's book titled "Low Dose radiation" ( You may recall that he competently summarized the DOE Low Dose Radiation research programme; I have been interacting with Tony when the book was in draft stage).
I know that by this note I have already irritated a few no-nonsense, serious radiation protection specialists! An intense effort will show that some of these concepts are useful in public debates

I request the earlier contributors of the list to say "Hi".

With warm regards
Parthasarathy
