Mike,

Its my understanding that the RMBK can be used for Pu-239 production for the same reasons the production reactors here were good.  You can refuel (defuel) the reactor while it is online so as to extract the fuel assembly at the point of peak Pu-239 content.  This let the Soviet Union produce power and metal at the same time.
