GOOD or BAD? some dentures radioactive?
Greetings,
I just have some time so why not to ask around?
Disclaimer:
Not to be taken too serious.
1. It has a slight possibility of bringing the old discussion about low dose
effects.
Not saying that, may be it is GOOD to have those dentures....from the
dentistry point of view?
Looking on all those TV commercials and constant dentist's reminds of tooth
hygiene; bacteria's in the teeth.
Seems, those dentures can are good ... disinfects?? Sort of portable personal
food irradiators. I heard that gold, silver and platinum dentures are used
not only for durability and in some countries as an income level indicator,
also for the hygiene reason
Of course, the dose rate should be higher...
I am not an epidemiologist, but I am wondering what would be the balance of
harms and benefits or, if low dose effects are beneficial, there are all
benefits. (patented idea?)
2.
Had those dentures caused decrease in the quality of dental x-ray films?
1500/ (365.25 x 24 ) = 0.17 mrem/hr, probably much less than x-ray dose rate
during the exam???
I do not have dental exposure data.
What is the waiting factor for the....teeth? or we need to use the head as an
organ
3.
Does EDE calculations from the x-ray exams used the Wt for the head as an
organ or teeth? Do teeth have their own "unlisted" Wt?
If so how does it go with the Regs? Oh yes, I forgot that that medical use of
radiation is regulating in the different fashion.
4. I am, as well Wes, also, interested how were 1500 mrem/yr calculated.
Was it measured thru exposure rate or put TLD on stack of dentures?
If so, what Wt (head or teeth) did s/he use??? to get EDE
I can imagine that if there Wt for teeth it must be very low.
5.
Well, this one is on the border...
Could be dose from dentures considered as contributors to TEDE as CDE with
biological half life equals to half of the difference between national
average length of life and the patient's age?
6. Beyond the border almost like a million dollars question.
If 5. is TRUE. Are those, two different way calculated TEDEs, the same?
Just some thoughts on personal leisure time.
Emil.

Radsafers,
The above dose of 1500 mrem/y from dentures is compared to natural
background, presumably about 350 mrem/y. Natural background dose of 350 mrem
is an effective dose equivalent (EDE). Can we assume that the quoted 1500
mrem from dentures is an EDE? If so, the local dose rate to the lips and
mouth must be vastly higher!
Can anyone tell me if this is so?
Regards,
Wes
