Re: Algae exposure pathways

Carp will eat filamentous/chara algae. Also we have examined stomach
contents of various fish and have found that Channel Catfish and Bullheads
also will eat filamentous/chara algae. Also crayfish eat zooplankton which
feed on planktonic algae. Crayfish are part of the predatory fish diet
(Bass, Sunfish, etc.). NUREG/CR-3332 is a must have (Radiological
Assessment, A Textbook on Environmental Dose Analysis) and devotes an
entire chapter to Terrestrial and Aquatic Food Chain Pathways. Table 5.41
gives an extensive listing of radionuclide concentration factors for
freshwater organisms.

Historically, we have found that algae (filamentous/chara) have been the
best indicators for monitoring seasonal buildup of fission and activation
product activity levels in our nuclear power plant radiation surveillance
program. The widest range of iostopes have been observed in algae samples:
Co-58, Co-60, Cr-51, Cs-134, Cs-137, Fe-59, Mn-54, Nb-95/Zr-95, Ru-103,
Ru-106, and Sb-125.

Radsafers,

What are the likely exposure pathways to man from
freshwater algae contaminated with Co-60 and Cs-137?

I'm looking for details on the biomultiplication
mechanism as well as concentration factors.

Bioaccumulation factors for fish and inverterbrates
are found in several publications. Anyone know if
these factors consider the contribution from algae or
do the factors reflect only direct water to fish
transport?

Thanks,

Joules Karama
