Nuclear Power Generation Up 9% From a Year Ago, Industry Says
Washington, March 17 (Bloomberg) -- The nation's 103 nuclear power
plants produced a record amount of electricity last year because
operators increased the electricity coming from turbines and reduced
the time plants were off line, an industry group said.
Electricity generation from nuclear power plants increased 9 percent
in 1999 over 1998 levels, producing as much additional electricity as
five or six average-sized power plants, the Nuclear Energy Institute
said at a news briefing today, where it released safety and
performance statistics.
``Nuclear power plants continued last year to reliably meet the
electricity needs of families, businesses and other customers with
extremely high levels of safety,'' said Ralph Beedle, NEI's chief
nuclear officer. ``The industry's outstanding performance across the
board shows that it is well-positioned to compete in a restructured
electricity marketplace.''
Nuclear power generates about 20 percent of the U.S. electricity
supply, second to coal, which supplies about 55 percent, according to
Energy Department figures.
