Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center is inviting applications from qualified
candidates for a Radiation Safety Technician (Technician A staff position)
at the Medical Center located in upper Manhattan (Washington Heights), 650
W. 168th Street, New York, New York.

Staff Position, 35 hrs/wk (flexible hours)

Description Of Duties

Work in the radioactive waste disposal program for Columbia-Presbyterian
Medical Center and the New York State Psychiatric Institute. Specific
responsibilities include but are not limited to: Pickup, inspection and
disposal of radioactive waste from laboritories and patient rooms, and
delivery of new waste cans, in compliance with the New York City Department
of Health and Transportation and burial site regulations. Package and label
shipments, and conduct inspections of waste containers to assure proper
labeling and packaging. The position requires performance of some
calibration and surveillance in all areas of the Medical Center where
radioactive material or radiation producing equipment is used, including
performing wipe tests, leak tests, and radiation surveys in all areas of the
Medical Center, including radioactive waste storage areas and Red and Black
Bag areas. Help coordinate the transportation of waste to burial sites.
Maintain computerized record-keeping for billing, reimbursement and
establishing liability. Perform decontamination procedures and patient
surveys. Responsible for Red Bag waste monitoring for the Psychiatric
Institute, Allen Pavilion, Presbyterian Hospital and University. Heavy drum
lifting is required. Maintain documents and records of all activities and
functions as required. Monitor safety procedures to ensure compliance with
appropriate safety rules and regulations of Columbia-Presbyterian Medical
Center and governmental regulatory agencies.  Perform other related duties
as requested.

Qualifications

Two years of college or a completed AA program with an emphasis in biology,
chemistry, or physics, and one year of related experience or equivalent in
education, training and experience. Radiation safety experience preferred.
Must have sufficient strength and stamina to perform the necessary tasks
associated with radioactive waste disposal.
