RE: Food irradiation---do seeds sprout? Did that denature the
I'm not totally disagreeing, but where does "nanny government" end?
Pasteurized milk: You don't have to drink it, you just need to buy direct. I
have, but I wouldn't give it to my daughter. And what makes you think that
dairy farm families buy at the store what they can get fresh from the
source?
Pork: I have no urge to eat raw pork chops, but I don't want them overdone
either, which is likely less than the recommended internal temp. I enjoy
sashimi and carppachio, although the latter is a (pardon the pun) rare
commodity these days. BTW, I'm told that where you get gelatin in Western
hospitals, Japanese hospitals give you sashimi.
Helmets and seat belts: I'm a believer, and I would have died at 17 if I
hadn't been wearing a helmet, but I have ridden without one, for specific
purposes. But I believe in freedom of choice on a Darwinian basis: anyone
who would do highway speeds without head protection needs to be out of the
gene pool, preferably before breeding. I believe in and use seatbelts, but
again, the issue of freedom of choice comes up.
Shots: Been there; didn't do that. N.B. it was not an extended trip.
Bottled water: Never been on an Italian train, but I don't drink water from
a U.S. municipal system if I can avoid it; the taste of chlorinated water
makes me queasy. On the other hand, I ate food washed in the local water
while out of country.
It all comes down to freedom of choice. While I don't have a comparative
risk analysis at hand, I can think of risks I perceive as greater than these
that are not regulated. I like it that way, and would just as soon not let
the camel put his nose under the tent flap.

Werner Heisenberg: We are not sure which side of the road the chicken was
on, but it was moving very fast.
