EU lends Bulgaria money to modernise nuclear plant

BRUSSELS, April 18 (Reuters) - The European Union said on Tuesday it
was providing a loan of 212.5 million euros ($201.8 million) to help
Bulgaria modernise two reactors at the Kozloduy nuclear plant.

The European Commission said in a statement the money would help
Bulgaria's National Electricity Company (NEC) modernise the 1,000-
megawatt reactors.

Bulgaria started talks on EU membership last month. To help secure
its invitation to the membership talks, it agreed to close the four
oldest 440-megawatt reactors at Kozloduy earlier than it had wanted.

The funds announced by the EU will help make two more modern reactors
at the plant safer.

``The project aims to modernise and bring up to acceptable safety
standards at the international level the two nuclear reactors...''
the EU executive said in a statement.

($1-1.053 Euros)
