Re: Decay-In-Storage



In my opinion this whole discussion is one that involves philosophy, 
more than technical basis. I say this because it really doesn't 
matter how many half-lives are considered, since one can do the 
calculations for as many half-lives as they deem necessary, be it 5, 
10 or 20. The real issue has to do with at what level can a facility 
still detect measurable radioactivity. That is the sole basis fro 
disposal. 

If you can detect it, you can't dispose of it, unless you meet a 
specific regulatory requirement. Unfortunately there is no BRC or 
DeMinimis value stated in the regulations. So, the issue should not 
be how many half-lives one allows material to decay, but how much do 
you have and can you dispose of it without violating any regulatory 
body.
