Re: [Fwd: [DOEWatch] Deadly toll of Chernobyl]

In the case of Chernobyl accident, the truth is that:
1. the safety rules were not followed
2. the reactor design did not match at all the nuclear
safety requirements
3. the reactors were not licensed nor inspected
regularly as they should have been
4. the reactor operators obviously were either
undertrained or irresponsable (who certified them?)
otherwise they would not have made the mistakes which
paved the way to the terrible accident.
5. At Chernobyl, the authorities were not prepared to
handle this type of accident; if they were, they would
have reduced drastically the number of victims...

etc.. etc..There is so much to say about Chernobyl...

It is to be kept in mind that in any given industry
(chemical, nuclear, aircrafts,..) if people mess up
with safety rules, chances for accidents to happen and
for people to be injured are certainly higher.

In my opinion, The Chernobyl case is not the example
to use to judge the safety of nuclear power.

I presume technical arguments will not convince you
but there is at least one thing both pro and
anti-nukes can do together: to promote safety culture.
