UK committee to warn kids off mobile phones-paper

LONDON, May 3 (Reuters) - A British government committee will warn
this week that children using mobile telephones are at greater risk
from radiation than adults, the Daily Express newspaper reported on
Wednesday.

The 12-strong committee, chaired by former chief scientist to the
Cabinet Office William Stewart and set up last year to examine the
risk of mobile phone use, is due to report its findings this week.

Citing sources close to the committee, the Express said it had found
``conclusive evidence'' that mobile phones have ``biological effects
on humans even where the radio frequency or microwave radiation is
emitted at very low levels.''

It said children were more susceptible to the radiation because their
skulls are thinner and their cell growth and brain wave activity were
still unstable.

The newspaper said the committee would call for a campaign to educate
parents and children on the potential dangers of using mobiles and to
prevent mobile phone masts being erected near schools.

``This is a very new technology,'' the Express quoted one source as
saying. ``We may not be seeing cancers now but in 10 years, who
knows? That is why we need to take precautions and plan to prevent
future problems.''

The Express said an estimated one in four of Britain's 24 million
mobile phone users is under 18 years old.

The Observer newspaper reported on Sunday that Stewart's committee
would also recommend that mobile telephones should carry health
warnings.

The consumer magazine Which? last month reported that hands-free kits
designed to protect mobile phone users from radiation actually
channelled three times more of it to their brains.
