Romania's Striking Workers Call for Nuclear Reactor Closure
Romania's Striking Workers Call for Nuclear Reactor Closure
Bucharest, May 4 (Bloomberg) -- Workers at Romania's Cernavoda
nuclear power plant vowed to prolong a strike for pay rises and
called for closing the reactor if demands are not met.
Workers are demanding a 30 salary increase this year dropping earlier
calls for a 25 percent retroactive pay raise for wages last year.
Most of the plant's 2,500 workers in the one-day-old strike also
initially wanted part of the plant's 1998 profit as well as an
additional 20 days of vacation for this year.
``We eventually agreed to demand that our salaries be increased
starting April 1 this year, not starting July 1999 as we originally
demanded,'' Cernavoda workers trade union leader Ion Monceanu said in
an interview. He said workers would end the strike by May 12 if the
government agreed to the demands.
Minister of Industry Radu Berceanu said the workers' demands were
unjustified at a time when Romania produces electrical power in
excess.
The Cernavoda nuclear reactor of Canadian design took almost 20 years
and nearly $2 billion to build. It's the only Western- designed
nuclear reactor in Eastern Europe and started producing electricity
in April 1996.
The first 706-megawatt reactor is part of a five-reactor plant
project in eastern Romania.
