Working with Uranium mine tailings

Dear Radsafers: Have a new researcher in the Geology department who does
research on uranium mine tailings, specifically looking at Lead, Arsenic,
Cadmium levels. He says he receives a few pounds once a year from a
Canadian processor and wants to know whether he has to have a radioisotope
permit to work with this material. Does anyone have any information as to
what levels of radioactivity remain in the tailings. I presume most of it
would be radium, but would appreciate any information regarding radioisotope
content, and ultimate disposal of this material. Please respond to e-mail
address below.
