Breakthrough possible on German N-power exit

Breakthrough possible on German N-power exit-source

BERLIN, June 2 (Reuters) - Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has pencilled
in a meeting next Thursday with leaders of Germany's nuclear energy
providers that is seen as offering a breakthrough on a long-stalled
policy to withdraw from nuclear power, a source said.

Anxious to avoid possible compensation claims, Schroeder has insisted
the pull-out be handled in consensus with the industry, which
provides around a third of the country's energy needs.

But while Germany's four main nuclear operators insist the withdrawal
must be spread over at least 35 years of each of the 19 current
plants' operational lifespans, the government wants the move done
closer to 30 years.

``The meeting is planned but not yet definite,'' a government source
told Reuters, adding that whether it went ahead depended on how
likely it was that a deal could be reached.

The four firms directly involved are Veba, Viag, RWE and EnBW.
