NRC to hold hearings on Indian Point nuke-lawmaker
WASHINGTON(Reuters) - The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission will
conduct public hearings on the safety of the Indian Point nuclear
power plant, which lies some 35 miles from New York City and
experienced a radioactive leak in February, according to a New York
lawmaker on Thursday.
Rep. Benjamin Gilman, a New York Republican, said the NRC informed
him it will hold hearings on June 19 at the Energy Education Center
in Buchanan, N.Y., where the plant is located.
``I am pleased that the NRC is now willing to open its doors to the
public and let our elected officials and citizenry know just what is
going on,'' Gilman said in a statement.
Owned by New York utility Consolidated Edison Inc. , the 931-megawatt
Indian Point 2 shut on Feb. 15, when radioactive water leaked from a
crack in one of the thousands of tubes inside one of the plant's
steam generators.
Steam generators are components that transfer heat from the reactor
systems to the power-generating portion of the nuclear power plant.
On June 2, Con Ed filed papers asking the NRC for approval to repair
the leaky steam generator and put the unit back on line to meet the
heavy summer cooling demand period.
No decision on the request has been made by the NRC.
