German Federation of Industry on Nuclear Closure Plan: Comment

Germany assumes a reduction in electricity demands. Germany assumes
significant investment in alternative power sources. German assumes
that the public will accept a lower standard of living when
electrical needs are not met, all in the name of nuclear safety. You
know what they say about about one who assumes!

German Federation of Industry on Nuclear Closure Plan: Comment

Berlin, June 15 (Bloomberg) -- Following are comments from the
Federation of German Industry, BDI, on the agreement between German
Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and the country's utilities to withdraw
from nuclear power:

``The consensus between the nuclear operators and the politicians is
in truth a result of coercion. For companies, it is of central
importance that their interests in a secure supply of electricity at
internationally competitive prices are guaranteed.

``It is Germany's nuclear reactors, extremely safe and reliable, that
have covered as much as 60 percent of power needs around the clock at
favorable prices.

``There are no equivalent options in sight. The government still
hasn't presented a conclusive concept that would meet international
requirements on carbon-dioxide emissions. The BDI fears that German
energy policy is heading for a dead end.

``The cost advantages of using nuclear power have allowed German
utilities to keep up with the competition. Exiting nuclear power must
be done in such a way that German utilities are still able to provide
their industrial customers with competitive electricity prices. Power
prices, which make up as much as two- thirds of companies' total
energy costs, are decisive for their competitiveness and jobs.

``From an industrial standpoint, Germany must be allowed to continue
participating in the technological development of nuclear power. For
Germany, a nation poor in natural resources, the option to use
nuclear energy must remain open.''
