Nuclear reactor causing safety concerns for Sydney residents

Nuclear reactor causing safety concerns for Sydney residents

Concerns have been raised about the Commonwealth's proposal to build
a new nuclear reactor at Lucas Heights in Sydney's southern suburbs.

The New South Wales Emergency Services Minister, Bob Debus, has told
the NSW Parliament that questions about safety and waste disposal
are not being properly addressed by the Federal Government.

He says there should be greater public scrutiny of the project.

"The NSW Government submission highlighted the many unanswered
questions and concerns that exist with this project and in
particular that there was a lack of detail concerning the proposed
reactor's design and operating details," he said.

The state and Sutherland council are reviewing the area's local
disaster plan, in the event of an emergency at the reactor.
