Tepco Shuts Fukushima Reactor Over Radiation Level
Tepco Shuts Fukushima Reactor Over Radiation Level
Tokyo, July 25 (Bloomberg) -- Tokyo Electric Power Co., Japan's
biggest utility, said it is manually shutting down a nuclear reactor
in Fukushima Prefecture after finding higher-than- normal radiation
levels in water used to cool the 1.1 million kilowatt reactor.
The utility, know as Tepco, said it has yet to determine the cause
though it suspects the water may have absorbed radiation from fuel
rods. The radiation presents no environmental danger at Tepco's No. 2
nuclear power complex in Fukushima, north of Tokyo, a spokesman said.
The shutdown will be completed by 11 p.m., Japan time.
This is the fourth unexpected shutdown of a Tepco reactor this month,
and the third in Fukushima, removing 4.1 million kilowatts, or 24
percent, of the company's 17.3 million kilowatt nuclear power
generation capacity.
The incident will not affect power supply as Tepco still has 3
percent of spare capacity to meet expected peak demand this summer of
60.6 million kilowatts, the spokesman added.
