"history of poistron imaging" at www.mit.edu/~glb

To my distinguished colleagues,

A paper entitled "History of Positron Imaging" can be read at
http://www.mit.edu/~glb/ .

This paper has been prepared to record the early history of positron
imaging and positron emission tomography (PET). The physics of
positron emission and detection is well documented. However, the
evolution of computed tomography and its application to X-ray imaging
in the form of computer assisted tomography (CAT scanning), positron
emission tomography (PET scanning) and Single Photon Emission
Tomography (SPECT scanning) are not as well known. This history is
intended to clarify both the development of hardware and algorithms
that have led to the powerful instruments available today for research
and patient care.

I welcome comments and suggestions concerning the evolution of this
fascinating field of medical science and engineering.

With best regards,

Gordon L. Brownell, PhD
Professor Emeritus
MIT Nuclear Engineering
