After dashing off the following, question I did a quick search and located a 
document on-line which appears quite relevent to this question.

Despite the title of the NRDC [Natural Resources Defense Counsel]  report 
being aimed at grabbing the reader, it has a great deal of cited information 
and detail on bottled water standards. See:
