Eskom Appoints Environmental Consultants for Nuclear Project
Eskom Appoints Environmental Consultants for Nuclear Project
Johannesburg, Aug. 4 (Bloomberg) -- State-controlled power
company Eskom and the South African Nuclear Energy Corp.
appointed consultants to conduct an environmental impact
assessment for a new type of nuclear reactor.
The consortium of consultants, led by Poltech (Pty) Ltd., will
conduct the study into the so-called Pebble Bed Modular Reactor,
a nuclear reactor that comprises pre-fabricated components.
Eskom has said it may build the reactors in South Africa to supply
domestic demand from 2008 and for export.
The study, for a site at Koeberg Power Station in the Western
Cape, plus alternatives at Thyspunt in the Eastern Cape and
Bantamsklip in the Western Cape, is part of a 432 million rand
($61.9 million) feasibility study for the nuclear reactor approved by
the government in April.
The economic feasibility element of the project should be complete
by mid-2001, with further work on the environmental study and the
nuclear licensing process finished by year-end, said Tom Ferreira,
a spokesman for PBMR Ltd., which plans to build the reactors.
PBMR Ltd. is controlled by Eskom and the Industrial Development
Corp., with a smaller stake held by British Nuclear Fuels Plc and
10 percent reserved for a black empowerment company.
