Russian, Ukrainian victims of Chernobyl visit Japan
NARITA, Japan, Aug. 7 (Kyodo) - A group of 40 Russian and Ukrainian
children aged 10 to 16 who suffer from the effects of the Chernobyl
nuclear accident and their eight attendant doctors arrived in Japan
on Monday.
It is the second visit of child victims from the disaster-struck
region of the Ukraine, following a trip in August last year.
Both trips were on the invitation of the Japanese government, and
this year's visit was also requested by the Ukrainian government.
The children's parents were exposed to dangerous levels of radiation
in the 1986 accident.
The group arrived at Narita airport and will go to Japan's
northernmost main island of Hokkaido to undergo blood tests at
Hokkaido University's School of Medicine until Aug. 22, according to
the Japanese Foreign Ministry.
The youngsters are also scheduled to visit hot springs in various
parts of Hokkaido and meet local junior high school students.
An explosion April 1986 at a nuclear reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear
power plant led to the world's worst nuclear accident. The disaster
killed and injured many people and caused serious damage to the
environment.
