Western Australia rejects possibility of nuclear waste facility

The Federal Labor MP for Fremantle, Carmen Lawrence, says a warning
has been sounded for Western Australia by a Howard Government
decision to delay the establishment of a medium level nuclear waste
facility for two years.

Dr Lawrence says the two year time frame means that action will not
be taken until after the next election, but the nuclear waste
problem will not go away, and WA is a tempting taget.

She says South Australia is enacting legislation to ensure that it
will not fall into a Federal Government trap, and the WA Government
should do the same.

"The South Australian legislation prohibits the import, the
transportation, the storage and disposal of such waste in South
Australia," she said.

"I hope that the West Australian Parliament will move quickly to do
exactly the same thing, otherwise we will become the repository for
the waste from Lucas Heights and anywhere else in the country."

A spokesman for the Environment Minister, Cheryl Edwardes, says the
WA Government will not allow toxic wastes generated outside the
state to be disposed there.

He says a motion Mrs Edwardes put to the WA Parliament late last
year to affirm this position was unanimously passed.
