Fred Cauldwell's passing



I have been informed of Fred's passing. 

I had known Fred for over 20 years. Not only was he a respected 
colleague, he was a good friend.

Frederic Cauldwell Jr., worked on USS Nautilus 

MILLBURY-- Frederic Sherman Cauldwell Jr., 56, of 29 Woodland St., a 
nuclear scientist, died Saturday, August 19, at home after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 30 years, Karen (Kutsavage) Cauldwell; two 
daughters, Shannon Marie Cauldwell of Grafton and Amy Lynn Cauldwell 
of Millbury; a sister, Elizabeth Cauldwell-Klein of Lafayette, 
Calif.; three nephews and a niece. He was born in Seattle, Wash., son 
of Frederic and Betsy (Hatch) Cauldwell. He lived in Groton, Conn., 
for several years, and graduated from Robert Fitch High School in 
Groton. He attended the University of Connecticut, and lived 22 years 
in Millbury.

Mr. Cauldwell was a nuclear scientist working for Duke Engineering 
and Services Environmental Laboratories in Westboro for 22 years 
before becoming ill last April. He previously worked for The Electric 
Boat Co. in Groton, Conn., where he and his father worked on the 
Navy's first nuclear submarine, The USS Nautilus. 
He was the great-great-grandson of Gen. William T. Sherman of the 
Union Army in the Civil War. He was a longtime member of the Sons of 
Union Veterans of the Civil War, serving as past Department Commander 
of Massachusetts, past Commander of A.A. Sherman Camp #18 in 
Uxbridge, Secretary and Treasurer of the Willie Grout Camp #25 of 
Worcester. He was also a past President of the Civil War Round Table 
of Central Mass. and an adviser to the Gen. William Sherman Statue 
Committee which recently erected a statue of the general in 
Lancaster, Ohio. He participated in many Civil War reenactments and 
lectured on the Civil War to many groups and organizations.
A service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, August 23, at the Dudley-
Gendron American Legion Post, Boston Road, in Sutton. A reception 
will follow. Calling hours will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, August 
22, in the Robert C. Roney Funeral Home, 152 Worcester St., North 
Grafton. Burial will be in Eastwood Cemetery, Lancaster, at the 
convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made 
to the Millbury Historical Society Monument Fund P0 Box 367, Millbury 
MA 01527.
