U.S. NRC to hold workshop on nuke plant relicensing
WASHINGTON, Aug 30 (Reuters) - The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
plans to hold a public workshop on Sept. 25 at its headquarters in
suburban Maryland for discussions about the application renewal
process for nuclear power plants.
The all-day meeting will take place in Rockville, Md., and focus on
three draft documents that could be used by the NRC staff in
evaluating applications by utilities for license extensions.
Thus far two nuclear plants -- Duke Energy's <DUK.N> Oconee plant in
South Carolina and Constellation Energy's <CEG.N> Calvert Cliffs twin
reactors in eastern Maryland -- have gained 20-year operating
extensions from their original 40-year charter. Other plant owners
have prepared extension requests.
NRC said the three documents under consideration concern a draft
regulatory guide, a draft generic aging lessons learned report and a
standard review plan for review of license renewal applications for
nuclear power plants.
The generic aging report would be used as the basis for determining
the adequacy of programs to manage aging effects on the plants.
The three draft documents can be found at
