Re: Special handling of individuals with lifetime dose greater

Previous International Regulation, before ICRP 27, stated:

a) The total accumulated lifetime dose accumulated in the wholy body,
gonads, the blood forming organs and the lenses of the eyes, at any age
after 18 years, shall be governed by the relation: D = 5(N-18), where D is
tissue dose in rems and N is age in years. Organs other than dose listed
above...........

b) Just as curiosity I'll give an example made by Prof Herman Cember, at
Course on Radiation Protection in Industry that was held in Denmark 25 July
to 19 August 1965, sponsored by Danish Government, IAEA and ILO

Assume a 25 years old worker whose total accumulated dose is 5(25 - 18) =
35 rems, is given a planned emergency dose of 12 rems. His total accumulated
dose is then 47 rems. After the nex 5 years, his maximum accumulated dose
should not exceed 5(30 - 18) = 60 rems. So he may receive during the next 5
years a total dose of 60 - 47 = 13 rems, or 2.6 rems per year

This story is further complicated if you take into consideration DOE, the
Navy, and OSHA requirements. 29CFR 1910.1096(b)(2)(ii) Still states:

The dose to the whole body, when added to the accumulated occupational dose
to the whole body, shall not exceed 5 (N-18) rems, where "N" equals the
individual's age in years at his last birthday; and ...

However, this clearly does not apply to NRC licenced facilities...

Angel,

Prior to January 1994, the occupational limits were, for an
individual with a completed NRC Form 4, 3 rem/qtr. whole body, as
long as the individual's PAD was < 5 (N-18) where N was the
individual's current age.

After 1994, the only limit was the individual must be < 5 rem TEDE
each ands every year (previous dose does not affect the individual's
ability to receive up to the 5 rem TEDE each year) ... unless a PSE
was imposed. However, the PSE has never been used by any US
commercial nuclear plant, nor will it most likely ever occur.
