Kids Projects Approved

by Valerie Burgher

Children's health, pre-natal care, adopted children and abandoned babies
got a financial boost from the Suffolk County Legislature Tuesday, as
officials approved funding for several projects benefiting kids.

Among the initiatives passed were the "Tooth Fairy Project Study," which
will allow the health department to check children's teeth for presence
of radioactive chemicals; funding for a perinatal nonprofit organization
to help combat infant mortality; money for post-adoptive services; and
establishment of a hotline giving information on where new mothers can
drop off newborns they cannot care for.

Legis. George Guldi (D-Westhampton Beach) sponsored the tooth study,
which grants $50,000 to the Radiation and Public Health Project to study
levels of radiation in baby teeth. The organization will research the
relationship between low-level radiation from Brookhaven National
Laboratory and incidence of rhabdomysarcoma in Suffolk County children,
who suffer from the cancer at higher rates than other children across
the country.
