This is a good question. I think you just have to keep telling the truth.
I startled a friend of my daughter's into momentary silence when she said
"...and there's no way to handle the waste..." at which I interrupted and
said "oh YES there is!" She then really listened and we had a good
dialogue. I think organizations like NIRS have become too sure of
themselves and think that they won't be challenged because DOE won't
challenge them (on the misguided theory that all views, even patently
politically motivated, disingenuous ones, are "respected"). People then
repeat this NIRS stuff with the expectation that it won't be challenged.
I have also learned that "environmentalism" appears to have attained the
status of a religion in some people's minds. I am asked "But you are an
environmentalist, aren't you?" in the same way that I am asked if I believe
in a deity. And as we must keep reiterating: it's not a religion, it's
science (or should be).
