Chernobyl Nuclear Plant Shut Down by Broken Power Line, AP Says

Chernobyl Nuclear Plant Shut Down by Broken Power Line, AP Says

Kiev, Ukraine, Nov. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Ukraine's Chernobyl nuclear
power plant was shut down after an ice-covered power line broke, the
Associated Press reported.

Reactor No. 3, the only working reactor at the plant, was shut down
by its automatic safety system. It will be restarted on Saturday, AP
said, citing a plant spokesman. There were no malfunctions or
radiation leaks reported, AP said.

Ukraine has said it will permanently close the nuclear power plant on
Dec. 15, AP said. The plant's reactor No. 4 exploded and caught fire
in April 1986. The radioactive cloud from the explosion may have
eventually killed thousands of people, AP said.

Environmental groups and European governments have pressured Ukraine
for years to shut down the plant, AP said. Safety issues and
Ukraine's concern over energy shortages without the remaining reactor
have been the focus of many of the disputes.
