Japan nuclear waste ship to go round Cape Horn

Japan nuclear waste ship to go round Cape Horn

TOKYO, Dec 20 (Reuters) - A ship carrying reprocessed nuclear waste
bound for Japan from France will use a route that will take it around
Cape Horn on the southern tip of South America, Japanese industry
officials said on Wednesday.

The ship, which left the northern French port of Cherbourg on
Tuesday, is expected to arrive in Rokkasho in Aomori prefecture,
northern Japan in late February, they said.

It is the sixth such shipment of reprocessed nuclear waste to return
to Japan.

Previous shipments have sparked criticism from countries whose waters
lie in the route of the shipment, as well as anti-nuclear campaigners
who say the vessel carrying the toxic waste poses a threat to the
environment and to the public.

The vitrified spent fuel, processed by France's Cogema, is being
transported in 192 containers.
