RE: Draft FDA Guidance document on the use of KI
Cindy -
You're not the only one who sees the inconsistencies ... and the one you pointed out is only one of many. One of my major sources of heartburn with this whole subject is the extent to which WHO and now FDA relied on post-Chernobyl dosimetry "data" ... and using those data to "prove" that a cause-effect relationship exists between thyroid dose and the occurrence of thyroid cancer. More to the point of your message, I and several of my state colleagues have pointed out repeatedly that the interdiction of contaminated food products will prevent the sorts of effects seen after Chernobyl (if you buy off on the premise that they are due solely to radioiodines!)
My $0.02 worth for this round ... and I promise that I won't chew up more than a couple of bucks on this issue.

Does anybody else see inconsistencies here? Most of the thyroid cancers
were caused by ingesting milk products, but we want you to take KI
immediately (or within 4 hours) when the accident occurs for protection
against inhaled radioiodines?? It seems we are spending a lot of time and
resources for protection against the inhaled radioiodines when it is the
ingested products that are the real culprits.
My thoughts alone.
