RE: use of topical iodine for thyroid blocking
Thanks very much to Jim Dukelow for the reply to my radsafe email! I teach
basic radcon courses, but am not a physicist or HP in the technical sense.
We do have KI issues in this state, since we have one nuke plant and a
very active nuclear safety program.

Yes, topical application of iodine-based antiseptic would be a replacement
for
ingestion of KI.
Professor Miller's research is described in a series of papers, I believe
in
Health Physics, around 10 years ago. When I get back into the office
Monday, I
will send a list of citations to RADSAFE.
Whether or not a KI program is in place, this seems like useful information
for
someone in Emergency Management to know.
On another matter, the appointment of Abraham to Energy has people here in
the
Tri-Cities (i.e., Hanford) scratching their heads, too.
