Pieces of DU can be detected with a Geiger counter because decay products
of U-238 are beta-gamma emitters and U-238 also undergoes spontaneous
fission yielding beta-gamma emitting fission products. The ingrowth of
these decay products in DU can be readily calculated from U-238 alpha decay
and spontaneous fission rates.
