Vietnam, India sign atomic power cooperation accord
HANOI, Jan. 8 (Kyodo) - Vietnam and India on Monday signed an
agreement to cooperate in the field of nuclear energy for peaceful
purposes, Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai said.
Khai made the announcement after a meeting with Indian Prime Minister
Atal Behari Vajpayee, who arrived in Hanoi on Sunday for a four-day
visit.
Speaking at a news conference after the meeting, Vajpayee said India
will provide technical assistance to Vietnam to build an atomic power
research institute in Da Lat on Vietnam's central highland, in
addition to a 100 million rupee ($2.38 million) grant to help Vietnam
establish a computer software center.
Vietnam plans to build the nation's first atomic power plant in 2020
to meet growing electricity demand for industrialization and
modernization
Khai said Vietnam and India will take cooperation on sciences and
technology as the key field to develop bilateral relations.
Khai said developing countries should cooperate among themselves in
face of chances and challenges created by globalization, and
described Vajpayee's visit as a continuation of traditionally close
relations between Vietnam and India.
Khai said the two sides also signed agreements to promote tourism and
bilateral cultural relations.
Vajpayee is the first Indian prime minister to visit Vietnam since
Narasinha Rao's visit in September 1994.
Former Vietnamese Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet visited India in 1997.
