In East Tennessee the Chattanooga Shale is considered
a low-grade uranium ore. It runs from the Chattanooga area up through Oak
Ridge. This formation shows up on the gamma-detection flyovers done of the
Oak Ridge Reservation and nearby areas due to a short-lived gamma-emitting
daughter of the uranium. I suspect that it is probably a marginal aquifer
at best, but it's certainly worth noting that uranium concentrations can
be high in formations other than the granites that have been mentioned.
