Re: Radioactive dose from smoking
NCRP 95 states in section 3.2.1 that a 30 cigarette a day smoker receives a
dose of 0.8 to 1.0 rad per year to small areas of the bronchial epithelium
at segmental bifurcations. They apply a quality factor of 20 and estimate
an annual dose equivalent of 16 rem (160 mSv). Applying a tissue weighting
factor of 0.8 to the effected part of the lung, an effective dose
equivalent of 1,300 mrem (13 mSv) is estimated. They go on to say that
they question the value of the quality and weighting factors and they do
not wish to use it to make an actual estimate of dose equivalent or ede.
