" FATE OF FFTF SEALED "
NUCLEAR NEWS FLASHES - Friday, January 26, 2001
--THE FATE OF THE FFTF WAS SEALED TODAY WITH PUBLICATION OF DOE'S FINAL
record of decision (ROD) to permanently deactivate the reactor. DOE had
considered restarting the Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF), which has been in
hot standby since 1992, to meet its mission for nuclear technology R&D,
medical isotope production, and deep space missions. But after extensive
study, DOE said in November it favored closing the reactor at the Hanford
site and meeting its short-term needs by using existing facilities. In
anticipation of longer-term R&D needs, DOE said it will begin working on a
conceptual design for an Advanced Accelerator Applications facility that
could be modified to produce proton-enriched isotopes. The ROD is in today's
Federal Register (http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/aces/fr-cont.html) under
the Energy Department heading.
