Information on prevention of restenosis

Some questions were raised on the use of radiation to prevent caronary

restenosis following angioplasty. The U. S. Food and Drug Administration

has appproved two such systems. One, the Cordis Checkmate System used a

ribbon of Ir-192 sources. Approval of this system was issued on 11-03-2000,

and documented information can be found at

http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/pdf/p990036.html . In Part 2, the manufacturer

supplies information on the systems effectiveness in clinical trials.

The other intravascular irradiator systems, the Novoste Beta-Cath System,

uses a train of Sr-90 sourse, and approval of its use was issued 11-03-2000.

Information on its clinical use can be found at

http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/pdf/p000018.html .
