Radsafers wrote earlier about Daniel Hirsch (see at bottom below) -- anyone
know anything about this Helmut Hirsch character ?
Thanks

German expert: Temelin is unsafe
The renowned German nuclear safety expert Helmut Hirsch has published a
study claiming that the Czech nuclear power station Temelin is more
dangerous than other modern nuclear plants. The study claims that the chance
of radioactivity leaking from the plant is ten times higher than at other
nuclear facilities.
Temelin has suffered a series of setbacks [[on the non-nuclear part of the
plant - Jaro]] since commencing test operations last year. The plant is
fiercely opposed by Austrian environmentalists, who
say its mixture of Soviet design and American technology is dangerous.

Radsafers,
What makes Dan Hirsch such an effective antinuke are the huge donations he
receives from the very rich Hollywood liberals. I remember going to a
debate between a health physicist and Hirsch about 10 years ago in
Hollywood. It didn't matter what was said in the debate--everyone
attending had already made up their minds. The only question was how much
money would be donated that night to his Committee to Bridge the Gap. So
far, Hirsch leads by at least 2-0 in California (UCLA research reactor shut
down and the Ward Valley low-level radioactive waste site not developed).
Due to his windfall funding from Hollywood, those of us advocating policies
such as the continued use of radioactive materials in medicine and research
are at a tremendous disadvantage.

Subject: Re: US Nuclear expert exported Downunder
Being a former member of a US nuclear regulatory commission
advisory panel does not mean much. Often the NRC will seek people to be
members of an "advisory panel" (vague term, the name of the panel might
help) to provide "balance" or a differing viewpoint. Technical or
scientific qualifications are not always necessary. Sometimes the selection
is made based on the "squeaky wheel" prinicipal. The stated qualification:
"a former director of the nuclear policy program at the
University of California" is misleading. He was a former director of the
Adlai Stevenson Institute for the Study of Nuclear Energy (the wording of
the title is from memory and a couple of the words may be different). This
is affiliated with the University of California at Santa Cruz. It has not
appeared to have been a major policy making organization within the
University or prominent in the public arena. I do not konw if it is active
at all any more. I am not aware of any expertise Dan might have other than
the ability to read what anti-nukes publish and create an interesting public
display. I would clasify him as an "anti-nuclear activist" rather than an
"expert".

I knew Daniel Hirsch about 25 years ago when we were both members of the
same Amnesty International chapter in Los Angeles, California. The
Committee to Bridge the Gap existed at that time and based on our
discussions at the time, my impression was that it was a small organization,
possibly with more words in the name than members of the committee. I was
in my left-wing phase at the time and he was decidedly farther left than I
was. At that time he had no scientific education and I remember providing
him with information on nuclear power based on my engineering education and
navy nuclear power training. I remember later seeing that he had become the
director of the University of California at Santa Cruz's Adlai Stevenson
Institute on Nuclear Policy. My understanding at the time was that this was
a political science program as opposed to a technical or scientific program.
UC Santa Cruz is probably the most left wing of all the UC campuses. It is
not known for its engineering or technical programs (if it has any). I do
not know when or how Dan became a scientist, I would be surprised to
discover that he is a scientist. In our conversations, scientific or
technical pursuits did not seem to be an area that was of interest to him.
Perhaps he underwent a sea change, contrary to Al Gore's belief that a tiger
cannot change its spots. He was a smooth operator, though.
