Colleagues —
Maybe "CO2-free", but this sort of "emissions-free" rhetoric
is what keeps getting us in a crack when there's a minor incident, such as IP2,
when spokespersons have to explain that yes, there was a release of radioactive
material to the environment, but it was within technical specifications. It's
difficult to explain tech specs without eventually getting around to the concept
that nuclear plants constantly release small quantities of radioactive materials
to the air and to the water. These too are "emissions", even if they are
trivial, as compared to the tons of NOx, SOx and COx released by fossil plants.
The media's response, understandably, was ... "<gasp> You mean to tell us
that nuclear plants are releasing radiation ALL THE TIME??!!
<gasp>"
Why do we keep shooting ourselves in the foot this
way?
