Re: No End to Fallout by M. Meijer in Sunday 22 APR

Dear Editor;

The so-called article, No End To Fallout by Menno Meijer is a fabulous

work of science fiction. If you will check with any responsible

scientific body; e.g., World Health Organization, or International

Atomic Energy Agency, or health physics organizations in Canada or the

US, you will find that few health effects resulted from the Chernobyl

explosion and subsequent fallout. Extremely extensive assessments were

conducted ten years after the accident and another follow-up was

completed fourteen years after the event. About 1800 youngsters

suffered thyroid cancers and fewer than one hundred deaths (including

about thirty workers who initially dealt with the explosion) have

resulted from the disaster. Thyroid cancer certainly is serious, but

it is treatable and curable. No other cancers or other health effects

have occurred which are attributable to the Chernobyl accident.

I hope you will inform your readers of this distortion which appeared

in your Sunday paper.

Sincerely,

Maurice Siskel
