[Fwd: equipment looking for a home]
duplicate of a message posted on another rad related list-
sorry if this is a duplicate for you.
Due to some space considerations in the RA waste facility, Yale OEHS
finds that they need to get rid of a large, Electro-Sonic Systems, Inc.
shredder/compactor [Model # SCS-30Y]. This unit was purchased
about 10 years ago. The system is designed to permit the
shredding/compacting of 500 pounds per hour of compactible,
dry radioactive waste. Two people operate the system, one
emptying the RAW [still in bags or boxes is fine] into the unit
via the sorting table/hopper. The in-drum compactor portion can be
used together with the shredder or separately into 55 gallon drums.
The conveyor, drum loading station and compacting area are all hooded
and ducted into the units ventilation system, which consists of a blower
and HEPA filter. [The manufacturers at the time stated that one could
shred a Volkswagen in this unit! ]
The system has a large footprint, occupying an area of
26 ft L x 8 ft W x 14ft 1 inch H.
I have the manual with all of the technical specifications, electrical
and other requirements, maintenance and trouble shooting info.
It is my understanding that the manufacturer is no longer in business.
The unit is working fine now - any future service of the unit would be
handled by the new owner.
The unit was used to compact dry lab waste when it was installed
10 years ago, and for a period of years thereafter. Recently, it has
been used to shred and compact empty liquid waste jugs. So this unit
has been used with RAW. It most likely has low level H-3, C-14
contamination inside. So this would not be appropriate for shredding
and compacting regular, non radioactive trash.
Due to the cost of this piece of equipment, I suggested it be offered
to a "good home" via AMRSO before we dismantled and decon a
perfectly good unit. [And quite frankly, I don't want to decon it or
have us pay to dispose of any of it as RAW.]
Yale University is offering this unit without cost - to anyone with the
appropriate NRC or Agreement State license to accept it.
I believe that Yale will even pay for its shipment to someone who
wants the unit.
If you have an interest, please contact me off line. I will fax more
details and send digital photos if you have an interest.
