RE: Japanese NGO to research radiation exposure in Belarus

Japanese NGO to research radiation exposure in Belarus

TOKYO, June 20 (Kyodo) - A nongovernmental organization (NGO) led by

a Japanese doctor will conduct research in Belarus with local experts

<SNIP>

The NGO, named Chernobyl Medical Fund and based in Matsumoto, Nagano

Prefecture in central Japan, will conduct the research mainly in an

area centering on the city of Mozyr, which was seriously affected by

the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident.

Comment :

Looking at UNSCEAR's 2000 Chernobyl report (available in pdf format on their

web site http://www.unscear.org/ ), its interesting to look at the map of

estimated Iodine-131 deposition --

the city of Mozyr mentioned above falls in the region where the median value

is about 5,600 kBq/m^2, which compares to about 250 kBq/m^2 in the Minsk

area, about 10,000 kBq/m^2 in the Gomel city area, and about 15,000 kBq/m^2

in the area just north of Gomel (which appears to have been the worst hit --

except for the area in the vicinity of the Chernobyl plant itself....).

So while Mozyr may have been "seriously affected," it appears to have been

considerably less so than some other areas of Belarus.
