Suitcase nucs?
Hello Radsafers:
A short while after the terrible tradgedy at the WTC last week there was
as short discussion about the possibility of future terrorists resorting
to other means to commit their horrible deeds. One of which was the
possibility of small nuclear devices that are packaged in suitcases,
carried into cities and detonated. I must admit that although I've heard
these things talked about in the abstract I didn't think they were
already being manufactured.
Can anybody provide more information on these devices? What is the yield
of such a device? Is there any credible information that there are over
100 of these devices missing since the collapse of the Soviet Union as
mentioned by somebody on Radsafe? Can these things be carried by a
normal person or is the term "suitcase" a figure of speech? Last, but
certainly not least, how can we prevent such a device being utilized, or
even brought into our country?
It's pretty frightening to think that such a device could simply be
carried, trucked, or somehow brought into a city and detonated by some
maniac or terrorist group intent on a higher death toll in a future
attack.
