Exciting, immediate career opportunity to apply your radiation safety
experience at a world-renowned research facility! The Environmental &
Radiation Protection Group within the Environmental, Health & Safety
Division seeks a technician to inspect laboratories, equipment,
accelerators, and x-ray generating machines, and monitor and document
work performed, to ensure compliance with radiation standards and
policies; work with researchers to assess and assist in correcting
potential hazards, including developing procedures to ensure regulatory
compliance; and conduct
incident investigations, file reports, and respond to radiological

NOTE: Incumbents in this position are represented by a union for
collective bargaining purposes. There are two classifications for this
position: 741.3 Health & Safety Technician, Principal, and 741.4 Health
& Safety Technician Specialist. Classification will be determined by the
demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities of the selected candidate.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Perform and document radiological surveys in assigned
areas. Resolve minor RWA noncompliance issues directly with researchers.
Assist researchers and other laboratory personnel in planning and
implementing their research by furnishing radiological protection
assistance. Investigate and report radiological incidents. Identify and
manage areas of radiological concern. Develop and maintain applicable
EH&S procedures. Instruct researchers and other personnel in the use of
radiation protection instrumentation, enclosures, survey techniques, and
ALARA principles, as well as new radiological policies and procedures.
Develop training courses as necessary to ensure compliance with 10CFR835
in assigned areas. Perform and properly document release surveys for
items leaving
radioactive material areas (RMAs). Respond to on-site radiological
emergencies. Participate in assessment teams and process improvement
teams as requested. Prepare necessary reports and incident documents.
Participate in annual RWA reviews and maintain records associated with
RWAs in assigned areas. Serve as backup to other radiation control
technicians.
QUALIFICATIONS: (For both classifications) Five years relevant
experience (preferably in a research facility under limited supervision)
in operational radiation safety to obtain and maintain RCT
qualification. Experience in the use of radiation detection equipment
sufficient to train others. Demonstrated track record of effective
verbal and written communication dealing with all levels of the
organization. Word processing, spreadsheet,
database, email, and calendar experience in a networked PC environment,
with emphasis on activity tracking and creating reports. Preference
given to applicants with NRRPT and/or DOT hazardous/radioactive material
shipping certification. (For Specialist) Demonstrated ability to manage
and execute complex projects. Demonstrated experience developing safety
procedures and training courses.
