Re: Irradiation of mail

If this is from the same press conference with Tom Ridge, aired Monday on Fox News, I believe I heard him (and/or one of those present) specifically mention UV radiation and give examples where this (existing) technology is already used to sterilize medical equipment, gauze, etc.  My general impression 24 hours after this "news event" is not that they were talking about using ionizing radiation.

Colleagues —

I heard a blurb about "sanitizing" the mail on the radio this morning, and there's an interesting press release at http://www.usps.com/news/2001/press/pr01_1022pmg.htm

Buried in the press release is the following:

"The PMG (PostMaster General) said USPS (United States Postal Service) will be investing heavily in technology to sanitize the mail. He cited equipment already available that uses irradiation to kill bacteria. "We're looking to buy our first piece of equipment today."
