Let me wholeheartedly recommend the article by Ivanov, et al in the latest (Nov) HP Journal: Mortality Among Chernobyl Emergency Workers. A quote from the "results" section:

"The mortality from all causes is lower than the general Russian rate and is basically a reflection of the corresponding pattern in Russia as a whole in the considered period.... the mortality rate in the cohort of emergency workers is gradually approaching the general Russian one."
