Meeting announcement -- Baltimore-Washington Chapter, HPS
TITLE: Informing Research Subjects About Radiation Risks
LECTURER:
Lisa Coronado, Clinical Protocol Administrator, Radiation Safety Committee,
National Institutes of Health
LOCATION:
NASA (Goddard Space Flight Center) Recreation Center
(See security requirements and directions listed below)
DATE:
Thursday October 18, 2001
ABSTRACT:
The NIH Clinical Center supports approximately 950 clinical protocols for
intramural research. Most protocols use radiation as "medically
indicated." In 150 of these protocols, the radiation exposure is described
as "research indicated" and must be reviewed and approved by the NIH
Radiation Safety Committee (RSC). Also, all exposures of healthy clinical
research volunteers and protocols conducted with certain radioactive
research drugs must be reviewed and approved by the RSC. To increase the
efficiency of the protocol review and approval process, minimize
stipulations to approval, and improve the communication of information to
prospective subjects, the RSC undertook the following initiatives:
Pre-submission assistance and review service; use of electronic
dissemination of protocol applications and communications; adoption of
effective dose to quantify and compare radiation risk; revision of radiation
exposure guidelines for research subjects; development of informed consent
templates that simplify presentation of radiation risk; development of a
supplementary informational pamphlet for research subjects; and creation of
a protocol assistance website. These services are now available. New dose
guidelines and consent statements are currently incorporated into new
protocols and submissions for amendment or triennial review.
This presentation will focus on the issue of clinical studies involving
research radiation, calculating/estimating the radiation risk, and
presenting the information in a meaningful way to prospective subjects.
