Position: EH&S Specialist I (Health Physicist)



SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Under  general supervision, performs managerial  and 

technical tasks in radiation safety. Assists the RSO in developing and 

implementing compliance strategies. Advises campus users of radiation 

sources on safe practices, policies and procedures. Major 

responsibilities: Manages and is responsible for the audit/inspection  

program of radioisotope  users and radiation producing machine 

laboratories; writes inspection reports, maintains files related to lab 

monitoring and audits. Advises users of radiation sources on relevant 

policies, and acceptable safe practices.



Manages and supervises operations in the radioactive waste program; 

processing, sampling/analysis of radioactive/mixed waste, in accordance 

with campus license, and governmental regulations, develops and 

implements operational procedures. Supervises and assists, as needed, 

students employees in the collection, transportation, processing and 

volume reduction of radioactive/mixed waste. Maintains related waste 

records, files  as required by our campus radioactive material license.



Presents radiation safety classes, assists RSO in the audits of 

radioactive material authorizations. Assists in personnel  dosimetry 

program (e.g., bioassays,  radiation monitoring badges), maintains 

radioisotope fume hood quality assurance program, responds to spills 

and other EH&S related incidents. Performs other duties in EH&S and 

radiation safety as assigned.





QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE (with or without accommodation): Bachelor's

degree in related discipline such as Physical Sciences, Engineering,

Health Science/Industrial Hygiene, or equivalent combination of

technical education and experience; strong organizational skills;

computer skills with working knowledge of word processing, 

spreadsheets, and databases; communication skills necessary to impart 

health and safety information to workers of a variety of backgrounds; 

strong interpersonal skills, including ability to deal effectively with 

people.



SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Selected candidate(s) must possess a

valid license to drive in the state of California; have the abilities

pass pulmonary function test, be fit-tested for and wear an air 

purifying respirator; wear a self-contained breathing apparatus; and 

move equipment and materials weighing up to 50 lbs with or without 

accommodation.
