Radiation Safety Officer. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is
seeking a Radiation Safety Officer for its Department of Environment, Health
and Safety. The position is responsible for managing the Department's
Radiation Safety Section, including its staff of three health physicists,
three safety officers and a radiation survey technician. The Radiation
Safety Section is responsible for compliance with three University licenses
(broad scope, accelerator and irradiator), three UNC Hospital licenses
(broad scope medical, medical accelerator, medical irradiator), as well as
other applicable federal and state regulations. As a leading research
university and medical center, we have nearly 300 authorized users, over
2,000 radiation workers (1,500 of whom are assigned a dosimeter) and 270
x-ray units, including those in our School of Dentistry. A new laser safety
program is being implemented. The Radiation Safety Section also leads the
Department's comprehensive EHS survey program. As part of its compliance
program, the Radiation Safety Section is responsible for regulatory
activities, operation of Radiation Safety Committees, dosimetry,
distribution of radioactive material, meter calibration, leak testing,
training, and consultation with research and medical staff to ensure safe
use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing devices. The Radiation
Safety Section is supported by Departmental clerical staff, other
Departmental safety officers (for surveys and spill response), a
comprehensive EHS information system, and the Environmental Affairs Section
(for waste management).
Professional Qualifications Required: Ph.D. or Masters degree in
radiological hygiene or related field is required, as well as significant
progressively responsible experience. Candidates must demonstrate
proficiency in radiation safety commensurate with the responsibilities of
this position. Experience in research and medical environments is preferred.
A Certified Health Physicist is desirable.
